Ban an idiot today!

Just say NO to idiots.

This is a petition I can really get behind! Ban an idiot today.

Edit [12:14]: added the words of the petition to make my stance clearer; this is a direct quote; I do not take credit for this level of sarcasm as I'm not that smart.

To: LiveJournal Staff

It is a well-known fact that idiots are harmful to your health. Idiots contribute to stress, which several scientific studies from real universities have shown can lead to numerous health problems and even DEATH. We believe that it is time for you to take the idiot problem seriously and protect your non-idiot members.

In recent years, the Tobacco companies have been held responsible for distributing dangerous products. You too, could be sued, but for distributing idiots! Therefore, it is also in your best interest to take steps to curb the idiot problem.

Our proposal is simple: each time an idiot makes a comment or a post, we should be presented with an option to disconnect them from the internet. We believe that this is far more humane than clubbing them to death with crowbars, as previous petitions have suggested.

Sincerely,
The Undersigned

Having been curious, I back-traced this, and discovered that the mentioned user is ficticious, and the entry made up. So I'm not as incensed as I was.

However, the point remains. No, you're not advocating physically preventing them from speaking, but you're advocating the removal of their method of expressing themselves, of rights the supreme court has decided are equivalent to speech in their protection under the first amendment to the constitution of the United States.

And if you start with people you consider idiots, where does it stop? Who gets to decide that you're an idiot, and silence you? Who gets to decide that anyone with a desenting viewpoint is an idiot, and needs to be silenced?

The more objectionable a form of expression is to me, the more I will uphold its right to be spoken, written, expressed. Idiocy exposed to the light of day will be seen as idiocy. Idiocy whispered in back rooms and alleyways will be given more credence than it's due, because, hey, if it weren't true, why would "they" try to supress it?

(And yes, thank you, I do know that I'm reacting all out of proportion with the stimulus).

Excellent arguments, and I actually agree.

This was actually ...a joke. Meant to amuse and mock. 8) Meant to amuse and mock quite a few things, actually, including the silly "let us not let other people friend us if we don't like them" petition.

The whole thing was made up by a friend of mine.

I really do know that my reaction is out of scale with what you've presented. And I really do hate to bring religeon into this otherwise calm discussion.

But really, you can't expect a Thorsman not to stand up and say "That ain't right" when he sees something he feels strongly about.

*grins* And you can't expect a Lokisdottir to not giggle and point when said Thorssman stands up. 8) Especially when said Lokisdottir has ten years of being an Odinswoman as well.

I do hope you got the joke now, though. It's a parody. Parodies rarely support their literal points.

I understand the joke. I don't think it's funny. There are some things that you shouldn't jest about, and in my opinion, censorship is one of those things.

I'm not going to type my first response, which would be to insult you as you have insulted me.

I'm simply going to say that you're welcome to live your life as you see fit, and ask you to kindly allow me the same lattitude.

By all means, "insult" me as I've "insulted" you. Does "insult" mean something different where you come from?

Not to be semantic... but isn't trying to get someone to stop jesting about censorship defeat the purpose of arguing censorship in the first place?

You'll notice that I said that my opinion is that some things should not be used as fodder for jests, and that censorship is one of those things. You'll further notice that throughout this discussion, I have attempted to persuade [info]deoridhe and the original author that this is not funny and misguided.

At no time have I said, "I forbid you to say this." Even if I had the authority to do so, I wouldn't. I'm not censoring; if anything, I'm censuring, though I would say that even that is too strong a word.

I'm attempting to persuade, not to enforce by fiat.

Sadly, the easiness of connection nowadays has given every t0m d|<K or h@rry the ability to l3@rn that actual +ex+ is actually a whole lot less cool than 'spekin with the fonetix' The internet is a said realization as to why that project was a failure. But also sadly, heaven knows if we all had the ability to disconnect idiocy from the computer, these are the same people that would immediately, after having been 'disconnected' will gain the ability to reconnect themselves, find an account to get back on with, find whom did this to them by tracing IP addresses from their origin server, await with patience for that person to go on AIM or MSN and force feed trojan horses... I've come to realize that there is a strange counter-balance to the idiocy someone types to their ability to do some odd crazy shit to get revenge. It would also lend to, with sadness, this situation: RANDOM_GOOD_USER voted for X_L33T_X to be disconnected. Two days later: RANDOM_GOOD_USER has 3.52x10^43 votes to be disconnected by the following users: X_L44T_X X_L55T_X X_L66T_X FUKK_U A$$H0|_3 X_L696969696969T_X I_HATE_U_H4RD X_TEEL_X Z_L33T_Z et.al.ad.infinitum.etc.yadda.yakkity.smakkity... ..a sad world when the idiots of the world have the most free time...

Y'see, we're just like the mean girls in high school. We're jealous of how cool and interesting you are, so we make fun of you out of a sense of inferiority. Plus, every time we make fun of someone we can raise ourselves up in the ranks of coolness, since being mean is an integral part of being cool!

Does that make sense?
